Aspendale Gardens Community Centre (2015 - current)

Back to the drawing board. After the previous 100+ venue hunt, there weren't many left. We rang around Community Centres, universities and schools, scout and community halls. Knowing that power comes in on wheels - all we really needed was four walls, a roof and some means of getting internet. After a much shorter venue hunt, Aspendale Gardens Community Centre said YES! In shock after such an easy yes - we immediately looked at the venue. We decided this could be a great opportunity - particularly considering it was right next to a Food court, we had a power solution, the venue was larger again and we had access to a few different methods for internet. We set up another point to point link to Melbourne PC User Group (no trees were harmed). Whilst we were able to establish a link, it wasn't enough bandwidth to support the entire event. It was, however, suitable enough to run games over. One of the event coordinators happened to have an Optus Cable internet connection and lived only 2km away - we had line of sight. With a successful operation at V12.0 on this link, we were able to re-introduce League of Legends back to the tournament lineup.

V13.0 saw the introduction of multiple Internet links with suitable acceptance. These links are:

  • Primary link: A point to point wireless connection to an event coordinator's house. This is using a 100Mb/s unlimited Optus cable connection. With use of new wireless technology pushing beyond 110MBs.
  • Game links: Used a combination of Optus and Vodafone 4G mobile data connections. We worked heavily with game developers (such as Riot Games) to assist in creating the right rulesets to prioritise game traffic through those links. The higher upload bandwidth through mobile data provided lower pings in-game and generally speaking were quite stable.

Whilst V13 brought a lot of improvements, the stability of mobile data caused occasionally ping spikes to around 100ms. We are currently investigating the possibility of including Telstra 4GX data to improve the stability of our game Internet links.
